Waldorf and Montessori Combined: A New Impulse in Education

James W. Peterson

Abstract

Peterson briefly briefly describes the historical background of the Waldorf and Montessori education and a succinct summary of their different approaches. But the heart of this essay is a demonstration of the essential compatibility of Waldorf and Montessori in public school classrooms by describing in some detail how he has been combining them in his own classroom for the last twenty years. He sees his role as a teacher as one of helping children learn about the world around them both by touching their inner, subjective beings and by leading them to interact with a rich educational environment.
